William MCCLUNG

In 1773 he emigrated with his wife and three children from Rockbridge Co., VA., to the mouth of Big Clear Creek, near present-day Rupert, WV. On acount of the Indians, he soon moved to near present-day Williamsburg, WV., where he resided thee years, returning to Big Clear Creek about 1776. He was the first settler on the Meadow River. He took a tomahawk entry for 100,000 acres of land on the river and its tributaries. When he first reared his cabin, there was not a store or mill within one hundred miles of his lonely habitation. The Indians were so troublesome that he plowed with his rifle tied to his shoulder, while his wife with her musket and three children, took refuge in the dense swamp during the day, returning to the cabin only at night when he was there to defend them.
In partnership with General Andrew Moore and Alexander Welch, he patented a tract of land contaianing 43,000 acres lying between the Meadow River and the Gauley River, in what is now Nicholas Co., WV. His descendants are very numerous in Greenbriar and Nicholas counties.
During his lifetime, he frequently remarked that he could stand on his doorstep, blow his bugle and call 200 of his descendants to breakfast. In hi sold age, he used to give 100 acre tracts of land to his grandchildren for their birthday present.
He was very tall and handsome in appearance, a good conversationalist and a most estimab le citizen. He was a Presbyterian and donated two acres of land on Otter Creek, one mile wes t of Meadow Bluff, for the erection of a church. The church ultimately came into the possession of the Baptists; the Amwell Baptist Church, near Rupert, being the outgrowth.
Preparations are being made (1904) by his descendants and friends to erect a monument t o his memory. His remains lie buried in the Otter Creek cemetary, one mile west of Meadow Bluff, WV.
