Dr. William Henry MCCLUNG

He was in the Confederate Army. HE first enlisted as a substitute in Col. Henry's regi ment. Three months later he volunteered and was assigned to Capt. Burkhart's cavalry, COmpan y k, 14th Virginia Regiment. In october, 1864, he was transferred to Hounshell's Battalion a s drilmaster, in which capacity he served until the close of the war. He was several times wo unded; twice severely. He was slightly wounded in an engagement in Greenbriar County. He wa s severely wounded in the left breast at Frederick City, Maryland. He was wounded in the righ t side in front of the blockhouse in Washington City, while attempting to carry his wounded b rother John off the field. He was wounded in the face at the Battle of Ninevah. He was captur ed at Ninevah, but made his escape by riding through the Federal lines, swimming the Shenando ah River three times, and taking refuge in the mountains. He reached his command the next eve ning.
Hebegan the practice of medicine about the year 1868, and had succeeded in building u p an enormous practice. HE is one of the most popular practitioners in his county. He serve d as Deputy Sheriff four years 1882--1886. He was President of the Board of Regents for the D eaf, Dumb and Blind School at Romney, WV for twelve years. He is a large land owner, having b etween 2,500 and 3,000 acres of coal, timber and grazing land. He grazes about 300 head of ca ttle each year. In politics he is Democrat; and in ecclesiastical affairs is actively identif ied with the M.E. Church South.
